2017 Toyota Corolla – Review

2017 Toyota Corolla - Review

2017 Toyota Corolla Exterior Blue

Jack of all trades but a master of none. The new 2017 Corolla ranks high on durability and offers many features for its modest price tag, but excitement was not included on that list. For such a landmark year for Toyota, I expected much less vanilla from the 2017 Toyota Corolla. This car is good for point A to B automobile, and it only does moderately well in meeting all the needs of the average car consumer. Toyota has positioned this vehicle to try to meet all the requirements the average commuter needs, but to keep the more economical price point, it is unable to surpass the competition in its class in almost every category.

Visually the only real big changes in this year’s model were in the front grille and bumper. Toyota also claims to offer more distinction in the wheel covers and rims now to attempt to help distinguish between trim lines. Feature-wise, however, there are plenty of behind the scenes technologies that helped heighten the driving experience, and many are included for free. Things that are included in the 6.1” touchscreen, automatic lights, keyless entry, push-button start, and even a backup camera (except the CE).

Where the Corolla falls short is with its standard 132-hp, 1.8L, 4-cylinder, and the Continuously Variable Transmission with Intelligent Shift (CVTi-S). Compare that to Honda’s 2.0-litre i-VTEC® engine, or even Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G, and Toyota’s measly 132hp sure seems disappointing. The Corolla doesn’t even beat these competitors in fuel efficiency with Honda being the clear winner, and only a minor difference in Toyota compared to the more powerful Mazda engine.

A major selling point for the 2017 Toyota Corolla is the implementation of Toyota’s TSS or Total Safety System. This is included as a standard feature on all Corolla’s, which certainly puts them ahead of the competition in this feature category. This system features: “a pre-collision avoidance system that warns the driver of potential dangers. It also includes things like automatic high beams, a lane departure alert system as well as dynamic radar cruise control.” This safety feature is so effective it could often border on annoying, especially in situations like making room for people on bikes on the backroads.

The most surprising thing to happen to this lineup is the introduction of the Scion iM. After Toyota folded the offshoot Scion brand, the only things that survived the cut were the iM and the FRS. While slightly faster than the sedan model, it doesn’t improve much in fuel efficiency. It will be very unlikely to see this model continue long as Toyota already has a full stable of hatchbacks with the Yaris and Prius.

In conclusion, the Toyota Corolla could be a very logical safe choice, for someone looking to go from point A to B. This car was seemed to be okay with being okay, there was no wow factor, no excelling feature to drive the need to buy. In the end, however, I guess Toyota will have the last laugh, as they satisfy the biggest niche of them all. The part of the market that is satisfied with good enough, you get most of the features offered in any higher priced vehicle, but yet it will still be safe and economical for your daily commute.

2017 Ford Transit - Review

2017 Ford Transit Exterior

That high roof is an unusual look for a van, or is it?

Driving down the road, you see quite a variety of work vehicles, Cube van’s, Flat decks, Service trucks, and pickups to name but a few. The days of the traditional van have gone except for a few that have seen more than a little action in its life. Consumers looking for a work van want more headroom in the back to carry out products to the job site or perhaps use as a portable office or shop. Enter the European vans that to us in North America look different. The Sprinter van is a classic example.

It started with a few driving the streets and now the template for other vans to inspire to be.  The 2017 Ford Transit is relatively new to us but has been around for many years in Europe, a success there and very possibly on its way to becoming a huge success here.

The looks scream European, but it fits right at home here in Canada. The headlights and front grille look just like most Ford products, and in fact, I found myself doing a double take when I first came across one.

In the cab, I found plenty of room and could see myself working in this all day, jumping out to make deliveries and working very comfortably. The Transit Van is available in three body lengths, 320 cm (126”), 363 cm (143.7”), 436 cm (172.2”), and three roof heights 211 (83.2”), 255 cm (100.7”), and 279 cm (110”).

There is an available Crew Chief option that helps you track your fleet. A GPS enabled black box is mounted in the vehicle and records detail information like location, speed, and fuel economy. It can also tell if the driver seat belt is in use.

Power:

The available engines are 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 with 275 hp, 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with 310 hp and a 3.2L I5 Diesel with 185 hp all mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission

Safety:

A work van should be just as safe as a cubical when it comes to being a part of the workday. The Transit van offers driver and passenger airbags, side curtain and front thorax side airbags, anti-lock brakes, and 3-point seat belts. If the SYNC option is chosen a distress call is made for you when the airbag goes off.

Roadworthy:

The power rack and pinion steering set up helps this van drive like a dream. Turning is very easy, and backing into loading bays is a piece of cake. The optional backup camera helps to dial in the proximity of the rear bumper and a wall. I thought a van of this height would be more problematic on the highway with the crosswinds but a trip across the Port Mann being passed by a large semi I felt very comfortable. It is very much like driving a minivan.  I highly recommend a test drive.

Key Features:

  • 16.9/ 12.5 L/100 km (city/highway)
  • Starting at $30,052
  • As tested $54,000
  • 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 with 275 hp
  • 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with 310 hp
  • 3.2L I5 Diesel with 185 hp
  • Available in three body lengths

2017 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE -Review

2017 Toyota Camry SE - Review

2017 Toyota Camry Exterior

The Toyota Camry has always been regarded as a huge sales success and an excellent value-for-money vehicle purchase. However, the new 2017 Toyota Camry has underwhelmed this year with their prized sedan. It’s not all a loss; the Camry has some new features and technology that does impress, but as a whole, the vehicle didn’t stand out from the others in its competitive class. In my opinion, I still think it has a way to go regarding a featured wow factor and price, thus being ranked below the 2017 Honda Accord and the 2017 Mazda 6.

I give credit to Toyota for their stylish exterior features giving the Camry somewhat of a performance look.  The front end of the vehicle looks okay, however, the gaping mouth look of the grille that cascades downwards makes me uncomfortable. Similar to a person with braces smiling with your mouth open; not appealing. The black mesh look is a recommended option. It’s apparent that Toyota focused on making the Camry incredibly spacious. It’s comfortable and roomy for all passengers. It features leather seats throughout and a featured moonroof which is always a nice touch.

Some of the Features the new 2017 Toyota Camry offers are a Hybrid Synergy Drive®. This allows for the optimum output of both gas and electric capabilities while maintaining fuel efficiency (5.6/6.2 City/Hwy for 200hp). It had smooth handling that is common in the top sedan cars; however, it lacked the sportier tight handling where you find in the Mazda 6 and Honda Accord. Multiple safety features highlight the Toyota Camry by having a blind-spot notification, rear crossing traffic alert, and back-up camera. An underrated and unique feature is the Qi-compatible wireless charger. This gives you the ability to lay down your smartphone on a non-slip charging pad as you drive. This was an interesting concept, but then again USB cords do the same thing.

Overall the Toyota Camry wasn’t an exciting ride; it may be nice for someone who is willing to have fuel efficiency and reliability over drivability. That may also be a person who eats there hamburgers plain. It constantly felt like something was severely lacking in this vehicle. I’m hoping to see an increase in performance for next year’s model while maintaining or improving its fuel efficiency. When putting the vehicle into park, you experience a beeping alert that the door is in fact open. Well, I found this very pointless and annoying. I am aware my door is open because I need to exit this boring vehicle, I do not need a loud constant beeping to remind me. Perhaps if the door is left open after a certain amount of time it could beep and let me know, that might be helpful in that sense.

Key Features:

  • Price: $32, 150
  • 8L/100km City and 6.3L/100km Highway
  • 5L, 4-cylinder, Hybrid Synergy Drive®
  • 10 Airbags, Seats 5

Experience The Outdoors

Experience the Outdoors

Experience the Outdoors

Experience The Outdoors

Camping is a great way to relieve some stress and spend time enjoying the great outdoors. You can do it by yourself or as a family. Some children complain about being taken from their video games or television programs, but the experience is one they will remember a long time.

You don’t have to be an avid outdoorsman or spend a lot of money to go camping. With proper equipment such as a good tent, warm sleeping bag, and good food you will be fine.  If it’s your first time out, pick a spot that’s not too far, maybe about an hour away. Check the internet for the best locations and pre-book your spot to avoid disappointment when you get there. Most sites have attractive locations such as a lake, ocean, or a river close by that you can plan hikes together. This will provide family activates for the day.

A good tent can make the trip that more enjoyable. If you don’t own one then here a few things to know about them, A-frame tents are usually smaller and can sleep two or three. They have a screened door and a small screened window to keep mosquitos out. Remember to close the door after entering or exiting, or you will be sleeping with them.  Most A-framed tents come with a fly which is waterproof material to cover the outside of the tent. If you’re camping on the coast, bring a heavy duty tarp to help with the rain. Dome tents utilize flexible poles that provide a strong structure when completed and can withstand stronger winds. You can also have larger dome tents that can you can separate into rooms with hanging walls. Cabin style tents are much heavier but provide much more headroom and more space, the downside to these tents are they are heavy, so plan on driving right to your campsite, and you will be ok. I recommend shopping around to see the tent that best fits your needs remembering you need enough space for your family and gear.

A sleeping pad or air mattress will help make a good sleeping bag feel more comfortable. Be sure to purchase one that is full length, so you are not constantly rolling off during the night. Preparing food is important to any good camping trip. Make sure you set up your stove in a level area to avoid any mishaps. If it’s your first time, then bring foods that are simple to make. A typical propane stove has two burners and a propane tank attached to the side. These are easy to clean and just as easy to pack away.  Remember to bring lots of garbage bags so you can either take it home with you or use proper facilities at your campsite. Be sure to put your food away in your car preferably to not attract unwanted animals. Clean the area before you go to give the next person the same experience you enjoyed on your camping adventure.

2017 Jaguar F-Pace Exterior

2017 Jaguar F-Pace – Review

2017 Jaguar F-Pace - Review

2017 Jaguar F-Pace Exterior

A once exotic supercar company specifically catering to the only privileged few dealing with their midlife crisis, has now dipped into the SUV market. Leave it to the British to begin to conquer foreign lands. What’s next? Could this new force take its growing empire to the affordable sedan market? Or perhaps the slow-moving, hippy, battery operated hokas-pokas market? (Watch your back Toyota Pruis!)

This brand new Jaguar F-Pace is a true driver’s car. It exudes performance with its supercharged V6 engine dishing out 380 horses, blasting off from 0 to 100 in 5.5 seconds. The Fuel economy is great for a sportier SUV it is equipped with an eco-mode that optimizes fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions, And Jaguar said “Why not?” and followed the trend by making it lightweight aluminum; this gives the Jaguar F-pace a fuel economy of 10L/100km highway and 13.3/100km city. Let’s discuss the advanced technology of this vehicle that’s almost reminiscent of that nerdy kid in high school that everyone’s thinking “Yeah, he will find a cure for a disease in 5 years” only the F-Pace is double as smart. It contains adaptive dynamics with configurable dynamic mode and adaptive surface response that redistributes torque specifically to the road conditions. Ever get annoyed when you are driving with a passenger, and they are constantly nagging about your driving habits? Well, let the F-pace do it for them with its complex integrated system providing feedback on your driving.

The exterior of the vehicle conveys a sleek and elegant look throughout. Containing similar features to the Jaguar F-Type; its elegant crease lines give the appearance of a fierce look. LED lights tapered in a “J” formation give it that seductive Jaguar cat look. Aerodynamics is key for sportier vehicles, and the F-pace has delivered in that with its advanced shape increasing downforce to reduce fuel consumption and wind breaking noise complimented by its high-speed stability.

Inside the vehicle, you will notice the stylish leather seating making your trip always comfortable. On those romantic endeavors, Jaguar has also included a set of mood lighting surrounding the F-Pace’s interior. Surrounding you with an elegant light show as you recline back into your chair with your significant other and gaze upon the stars through the panoramic sunroof. The 11 speaker sound system by Merdian™ allows you to set the mood right with some Marvin Gaye. It’s completely spacious with the ability to fit any standard twin mattress, and as well as any other items.

The overall drive of this vehicle is without any flaw in performance. The double wishbone front suspension provides the F-Pace with tremendous handling capabilities to match with the dynamic power. The heads-up display is a nice touch allowing the driver to never take eyes off the front. The Jaguar F-Pace had a stiff feel to it, so every turn would feel tight. Some restrictions to the rear visibility was some concern of mine, I would often have problems viewing my rear in a full capacity vehicle. This could be caused to the styling choice of slimming down the backend to maintain a sporty look as opposed to boxy. A Unique option is the introduction of an activity key which I found to be an excellent idea. It’s fully waterproof and resembles a Fitbit™ type style that is worn on the wrist that fully locks and unlocks your F-Pace with a swipe over the rear logo. Giving you the fearless satisfaction that you won’t lose your key while out on an adventure.

Key Features

  • Starting price $ 67,900
  • 3.0L Supercharged V6 Engine
  • 13.3L/100km City, 10.0L/100km Highway
  • 4 years/80,000 kilometers 24/7 Roadside Assistance/New Vehicle Limited Warranty

BMW X4 M40i Exterior

2017 BMW X4 M40i – Review

2017 BMW X4 M40i - Review

BMW X4 M40i Exterior

BMW blends the lines between its class of SUVs and car with their all-new 2017 X4. This lineup is labeled as an SAV or sports activity vehicle. The acute angles and fastback sloped rear has this vehicle reminiscent of a coupe in overall appearance with the larger aggressive stance of an SUV.

This new addition to BMW’s lineup is very similar to their very popular X6. I found the exterior to be more exciting and sporty than the typical blocky right angles found on most SUVs including the very similar X3. This coupe-like design does create a smaller space for the second-row seating, with about 45mm lost in leg and headroom. Now the spec’s do show a decrease in cargo volume, with the foldable seats and nearly identical exterior dimensions as the X6, I felt there was ample room for an SUV in this class.

The X4 was truly designed to be driven under the M badge as the M40i, with its “TwinPower” turbo 3.0l inline 6. This is the same engine found in BMW’s M2 coupe. And after being tuned for the SUV, it delivers 0-100km/hr. in 4.9 seconds with 355hp and 343 ft./lbs. of torque. With these impressive specs, it beats the similar priced; Porsche Macan S having 0-100km/hr. in 5.0s and the Audi SQ5 at 5.3 seconds. Providing some of that speed and acceleration are technologies like “TwinScroll” turbo, high precision injection system, DoubleVANOS variable camshaft control system, and the VALVETRONIC fully variable control system. The additional $12,000 at MSRP between the Xdrive 28i and the M40i provides an increase of almost 100hp, which allows it to live up to its sports car-like appearance. An interesting point to note is that the performance doesn’t come at a sacrifice to fuel consumption as both the competition above had a combined fuel consumption of 12.2l/100km, whereas the X4 M40i was only 11.3l/100km

As expected with a luxury brand such as BMW, the driving experience was always unapparelled. The exciting new role of a small sports SUV, showcased all their advances in racing technology, while still providing ample space for the daily commute or weekend escape. For someone who doesn’t want to fully give up the thrill of driving a small coupe like the BMW M240i, you can find all that power and excitement in the larger and more versatile BMW X4 M40i

Key Features

  • MSRP $61,000
  • Power 355hp @ 5,800 – 6,000rpm
  • Torque 343lb-ft @ 1,200 – 5,000rpm
  • Acceleration 0-100 km/h in 4.9s
  • Combined fuel consumption 11.3 l/100km

2017 Ford Fusion – Review

2017 Ford Fusion SE - Review

Ford Fusion Exterior

Quietly becoming the leader in mid-sized sedans, Ford has bolstered its Fusion with a variety of options. Quietly, due to the fact that in a mid-size sedan class it is often overshadowed by the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.  Challenging those two, the 2017 Ford Fusion has offered something the competitors don’t. This innovation is the six types of engine options and availability for front and all-wheel drive all exclusive to the New 2017 Ford Fusion.

I myself have had the pleasure of driving the 2017 Fusion S and SE. While both being the entry level options of the Fusion, they both impressed me immensely. Starting with the differences between the two; The Ford Fusion SE exclusively has LED lights, chrome front grille, signature Ford SYNC® voice communication and entertainment, and a variety of optional upgrade packages all of which aren’t available in the Fusion S.

The exterior features a couple new editions to the 2017 Fusion. First off they have added three new colours that are sure to turn heads. Ford has released white gold, lightning blue, and metallic burgundy velvet.   Ford has given the 2017 Fusion a Kardashian style surgical upgrade to the rear-end. The new upgraded on the back-end has impressed me more than any other so far. It features a new platinum trim across the trunk that causes a unique and elegant look to the taillights.

Inside the vehicle, Ford has introduced a new rotary gear shift. This gives a more smooth transition from park to drive and a quick seamless witch to reverse. It comes really in handy when backing out of a tight stall while other aggressive shoppers pass dangerously behind you. The quick transition mixed with the safety alerts on the reverse cameras assures that you won’t back into a person’s shopping buggy again. Unless you mean to after that person cut in front of you in line at Costco.

It quickly becomes apparent when you put this car into drive at how quick and smooth the ride feels.  The 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine Fusion SE all-wheel drive, is accompanied by the patented Ecoboost® engine delivering 231 horsepower. While a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine that produces 175 horses fuels the Fusion S. Both have a multi-link suspension (the use of three or more suspension arms) in the rear allowing for a majestic and smooth as possible on any road surface.

The Ford Fusion comes with a 5 year/100, 000 km power-train warranty, 5 year corrosion warranty, and a roadside assistance program lasting 5 years/ 100, 000 km’s.

It’s a sportier, stylish, and more comfortable ride than most other affordable mid-size sedans. When you begin your drive, you will notice how quiet and smooth the ride feels on the road.  It does however lack something else in order to stand out among the competitors. The fuel economy is pretty underwhelming at 11.3L/100km city and 7.5L/100Km highway for the Fusion Se, and 10L/100km city, 7L/100Km highway for the Fusion S. For comparison sake, the Nissan Altima has 8.8L/100km city, and 6L/100km for highway.

Fusing style, comfort, and power the Fusion has lived up to its title.
