2019 Mercedes-Benz A220 – Automotive Review

2019 Mercedes-Benz A220 – Automotive Review
Excerpt/Headline
With this entry-level luxury sedan set to entice buyers into the brand at an affordable price, offering a complete blend of luxury design and features bundled up in a financially respectable package. Well, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 does just that. While the Mercedes originally released the CLA to fulfill this space; At the released price, the elements of quality and lack of spaciousness in the rear seats didn’t have buyers sticking around. Well the A-class now acts as the most economical segway into a Mercedes-Benz brand with many of the expected luxuries found in their higher-end models
Interior
Inside the A 220, your immediate drawn is towards the dash. The silver coating throughout and use of layering are smart in making the infotainment screen look extravagant and expensive. Previously in the CLA models, the screen looked almost like it was tacked-on as an afterthought. Where-as the A 220 with the $3000 premium package and its dual 10.25” screens look almost as if it’s “floating” on the dashboard. This digital screen combo creates the feeling of it being one elongated piece extenuating that high-end design feel. Other available options like $1990 for leather seats and $1500 for a HUD can quickly elevate this car, but also as quickly take it out of the entry category. Our A 220 featured a white and black piano-style seating, which looked slick but, I can only imagine how fast the white color will fall victim to stains. The 2729 mm wheelbase and 1443 mm height provide enough comfort and space for a car full of people. Also, a point to note, the A 220 sedan has 420 L of truck capacity, compared to the hatchback A 250 with 370 L.
Styling
For an extra $310 “wow factor,” the Mercedes-Benz A 220 can be equipped with a 64-color ambient lighting system, including illuminating the, air vents, headrests, and door trim. We spent hours setting different color schemes and displays for our drive moods. This was mainly for the show-off factor to passengers and friends, which is, of course, part of the Mercedes experience, correct? It’s one of the more unique and exciting features that we have seen in most modern vehicles, including some higher-end models. The Meridian or available $700 Burmester audio system, in combination with the unique display, only electrifies that ambiance.
Driving
Now under the hood is a different story. There happens to be enough pace with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission routing the 188 horsepower; however, the acceleration isn’t overly impressive. The A 220 4Matic hits it’s 0-100Km in 6.5 seconds. With the price jumping when you include the necessary options, it just gets to be overpriced for a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, in my personal opinion. At that point, I’d start to look at the cheaper Audi A3 or the Acura ILX. The A 220 shifts smoothly at hard acceleration thanks to the dual-clutch transmission, but at lower speeds, it felt somewhat clunky when downshifting to lower gears. However, the overall drivability is adequate. Featuring 3 drive modes, ideally, the A 220 should be left into comfort. The best blend of shift performance and throttle control. Eco-mode feels completely gutless and strictly feels like you should limit yourself to the slow lane. Sport mode will provide later shifting, and higher RPM’s in between gears, providing a more attractive engine fluttering
While this is an excellent segment from Mercedes-Benz into affordable luxury sedans. The A 220 goes from affordable to “why didn’t you just get a C-Class?” in a matter of just a couple options.

2020 Mercedes-Benz E 450 – Automotive Review
Overview/Summary
The Mercedes E-Class is available in Coupe, Sedan, Convertible, and Wagon… you want it; they got it! While this car does sit on the higher end of the price tag with a starting MSRP of $72,300 CND if you are in the market for a high-end luxury sedan, the E 450 is certainly worth checking out.
(+) – When one wants comfort, style, speed and luxury the E 450 Sedan easily fits the bill
(-) – Jack of all trades often means the master of none
Highlights
Only slight modifications from the last years refresh. Maintaining the 2019 name change from the E 400 sedan to the E 450, accounting for the larger V6

Driving
The 3.0L V6 Biturbo engine generates 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, which in the larger E 450 sedan allows you to still feel the acceleration when hammering it to pass someone on the freeway. The drive feel on this car is exceptional with minimal negative feedback like noise, bumps, and over/understeer, providing you the ability to entirely focus on the pleasures of driving a luxury automobile. For example, technologies like the Electromechanical Direct-steer feature automatically varies the ratio based on how aggressive you are on the wheel, providing tight, responsive feedback at higher speeds and minimal effort in low-speed activities like parking.
Styling
The Mercedes E-Class Sedan features the standard wide grille with the iconic logo front and centre. While style is always something of a personal taste, I like the direction Mercedes has taken in recent years. Even without the dinner plate-sized logos manufacturers are using these days, the car looks like a Mercedes from every angle. Even better is the changes to the grille in the Luxury Package, as remove the logo cleaning up the lines, and add the famous Three-Pointed Star on the crown of the hood, where it rightfully belongs
Tech & Safety
As expected at this price point, the Mercedes E 450 comes loaded with options and tech features. Starting front and centre with a standard 12.3-inch central display, and an available second 12.3-inch screen as a customizable instrument cluster. The available Head-Up Display projects a 21x7cm full-colour graphical display showing information like navigation, driving speed, cruise-control settings, and more. Upgrade to the Burmester® 3D system for a 1,450-watt amp powering 23 speakers, including a trunk-mounted subwoofer with its own 400-watt amp. The E 450 is fully equipped with a slew of safety technology and features noteworthy available options like Route-based Speed Adaptation. This feature automatically adjusts the car’s speed in anticipation of curves, traffic circles, and highway interchanges, then resume up to the posted speed limit afterward.

2019 Mercedes AMG C 43 Wagon – Automotive Review

2019 Mercedes AMG C 43 Wagon – Automotive Review
Overview/Summary
Honestly, at first, I was a little hesitant while picking up this car. It brought back memories of my Dad’s ugly old Ford Taurus; the backward-facing bench seat allowed my brother and myself to make faces at the vehicles behind us. However, that hesitant feeling vanished because the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC looks nothing like that old car. Mercedes-AMG as always has produced a very sleek and sophisticated vehicle, from the sweeping exterior lines to the premium look and feel of the interior.
After packing all the gear required for a weekend away at the lake, I was then entirely sold on the idea of a wagon. Unlike many of the smaller SUV’s and Crossover’s we’ve tested lately, everything just seemed to fit, and when taking an eight month old little girl camping… I mean everything. While it may have been packed full everyone still was comfortable on the long trip out to Port Alberni from the mainland.
It wasn’t only the space that had me sold; it was the drive. Just like it’s smaller brother the C43 sedan, the vehicle was just a pleasure to drive. The snapping and crackling exhaust notes found in the Sport+, mode could always put a smile on my face. With AMG tuning the 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo engine to have a whopping 385hp, the wagon can shoot down the road with almost criminal ease. While the 69% rear axle torque bias, and low center of gravity, kept that classic racecar feel. Keep in mind depending on the era, the muscle available in the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C 43 could easily have been in an actual race car. As for the first time in 1986, AMG implanted the 5.0-liter V8 into an E-class coupe, which received worldwide fame under the nickname “The Hammer.” As per this 1986 Car and Driver review,
Boy, it sure is crazy to see how far things have come… With a starting MSRP of $59,990 CND, this wagon available exclusively in Canada, while still expensive, when you compare it to the rest of Mercedes lineup or a luxury SUV it is actually quite reasonable.
- (+) – Really fun and responsive to drive, but still has room for the whole family
- (-) – In Sport/Sport+ mode, sometimes when accelerating hard from a stop and then easing off of the gas can cause the computer to shift like a 16-year-old learning a manual transmission for the first time

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class – Automotive Review

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class – Automotive Review
The Mercedes G-Class is the latest victim of the “redesigning” phase Benz is going through. Something that hasn’t been done in over 4 decades. The exterior still screams a “demanding box on wheels” with a just a few minor touch-ups and a few added inches to the stance. The changes made to the exterior are so subtle, they aren’t noticeable to the casual fan unless they are placed side-by-side. The interior, on the other hand, has been completely overhauled and upgraded, and it is a sight to see. If you liked the last box on wheels, you’re going to be happy about this one. The G-Class stays true to its heritage but adds a slew of technology making this luxury SUV more capable than ever.
The G-Class interior has gone through an aggressive, but a much-needed update. More space, more tech, sleek design, all while keeping a few imperative features that have survived previous tweaks. Talking about the grab handle in front of the passenger and the side-hinged barn door with the full-size spare fitted at the rear. The pop-up screen has been replaced with a 12.3” infotainment system (will not come with MBUX interface, yet) that has been molded into the dash. The steering wheel has been swapped for a much more modern looking one with more appealing controls. Mercedes updated the air vents with the classic-style vents that were once used in the older models while removing the out-dated climate control dials and oversized buttons; although the toggle switches for the locking differentials remain a staple design. The shifter has been replaced with what looks to be a touch style writing pad, while the new gear selector sits below it. The cabin has loads of space, which means you will finally be able to fit average sized adults in the back seats now. The driver and passenger receive more shoulder and elbow space, and the backseat passengers are gifted an extra 6 inches of leg room. The driver seat will come with air-filled side bolsters that will adjust according to the driving styles. The G-Class’ interior will (finally) be on-par with the E-Class and S-Class vehicles.
Under the aluminum hood will sit a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 that will pump out 416hp and 450 ft-lbs of torque and will deliver a reasonable 21mpg. Coupled with the V8 will be a 9-speed transmission, and all together we will get a 0-62mph time of around 5.5 seconds. The AMG version will crank out 577hp and jump to 60 in 4.4 secs. Thanks to the aluminum fenders and doors, the G-Wagen sits 375lbs lighter, meaning exiting and entering doesn’t involve a loud “guh-gunk” anymore. There will be 10.6 inches of air between the G-Wagen and the dirt it drives on, and an independent front suspension which will make it even more capable off-road than before. With the rack and pinion steering set-up, it will make the steering feel very light and will be a breeze to drive around town.
If you are wondering why the G-Class went through a redesign, it is because the Range Rover was becoming more popular with buyers. The out-dated style and tech in the G-class were far behind what Land Rover was able to offer. The Lexus LX570, Lincoln Navigator, and Toyota Land Cruiser are part of the conversation when it comes to size and practicality, but include luxury and the G-Class stands alone. The 2019 G-class has gone through a redesign and has come out the other side better in every way. The exterior tweaks were minimal but effective. The interior overhaul was drastic but vital. Something not many car manufacturers are able to accomplish. The G-class is for making a statement, but throw a bit of practicality and legroom into the mix, and you might be able to justify spending the $130,000 for the G550. Keyword being might…
2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 Coupe

2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 Coupe
The new 2018 Mercedes E400 coupe might not be the strongest or the fastest but damn it sure is the prettiest. This car is a modern take on the classic 1950’s personal luxury car. These cars emphasized image over practicality, often with a two-door coupe or convertible styling. They set themselves apart from the spec driven sports cars by placing a greater emphasis on comfort and style. While they usually contained similar engines and powertrains, this power was instead there to accommodate the installation of more luxurious sizes, features, and accessories.
The new body style for the E400 features a class-exclusive B-pillarless design, which no other manufacturer does at this price point. With the frameless side windows down and the extra-large sunroof open the E400 felt incredibly open and airy. At first glance, the coupe does look very similar to its S and C class coupe siblings, but I found the shorter snub nose gave this coupe a more appropriate compact appearance.
The wider and longer design was put in place to attempt to fit two adults in the back seat but let’s face it if you chose the coupe you know it’s designed for two. The sculpting on the car is kept very minimal, and there are almost no creases or hard lines. The exterior seems to flow smoothly like a still pond, and flawlessly form to the shape of the body, the way a red-carpet designer dress fits on an A-list movie star. The car comes standard with 18” 5 spoke wheels, but you can always upgrade to the stylish 19” AMG twin 5 spoke rims.
The E400 can be equipped with the same spectacular sound system found originally only in the ultra-premium S-Class, now you have two different Burmester sound systems options to choose from. The top of the line option has 23 speakers with 1450 watts distributed onto 25 amplifier channels, the “Burmester® High-End 3D-Surround-Soundsystem of the E-class represents an effort which has no equal in this vehicle segment.” Another feature always worth having is the HUD, its one of those things you might think is frivolous and unnecessary, but once you’ve used it, you’ll understand.
Now the E400 isn’t a racehorse, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have something to bring to the table. The twin-turbo 3.0L V6 provides a decent 329hp and 354lb-ft of torque. This powerhouse can launch the car from 0-100km/hr. in 5.3 seconds. While it might sacrifice a few decimal places at the finish line, the E400 instead promises an incredibly smooth, comfortable and enjoyable ride the entire way. Mated with the Mercedes advanced 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the car provided easy torque, and for those straight roads where you really felt like dropping the hammer, it was more than capable of providing exhilaration and speed. With three different suspension systems including tech like “Air Body Control,” the road will smoothen out before you, and the car will melt into the corners with the poise of a dancer.
Again, and again Mercedes shows that sophistication and class have their place in an environment where everything else has a number which is compared and measured by its peers. The E400 coupe is a design that showcases all that Mercedes has to offer, they provide an exceptional driving experience, in a car that feels more solidly built and engineered than anything else even remotely near its already premium price tag
