2018 BMW 440i – Automotive Review

2018 BMW 440i – Automotive Review

The 2018 BMW 440i, a unique blend of sportiness and elegance, that can be built to suit the demands of even the pickiest consumer.

2018 brings a refreshing update to the 4 series line-up, which was first introduced in September 2013. With a notably wider stance and longer wheelbase than its predecessor, the BMW 4 series is available as a Coupé, Convertible, and a 4-door Gran Coupé.

“The maxim guiding the BMW 4 Series model update was ‘stick to the proven formula but add extra richness to the cars’ character’. That’s why the exterior design shines the spotlight most brightly on the dynamic and elegant qualities of the BMW 4 Series family”

-Domagoj Dukec, Head of Exterior Design BMW Automobiles.

Major Updates Include:

  • Restyled nose, keeping with the broad muscular almost bulldog BMW styling.
  • Larger central air intake that increases in size toward the exterior edges
  • Similar front headlights but now new bi-LED headlights as standard, with available Icon II full-LED adaptive headlights
  • Elongated design of the rear end with everything focusing on giving the impression of the car sitting wider, lower and having an enhanced muscular look
  • The rear LED lights are no longer divided into individual lights but are given a more cohesive look that tapers off towards the center.
  • Signal indicators take up more space, and the inner section of each rear light is now used for signaling as well

Exterior

New exterior paint finishes have been made available for the 2018 BMW 4-series. The first is called Snapper Rocks Blue Metallic, which is a new shade of turquoise, and the second is called Sunset Orange which is a burnt orangey-red color.

Interior

The interior of the BMW 440i was everything you would expect from a luxury import vehicle. With extra fine materials used throughout, the refresher for 2018 had only minor improvements like the finishes added to the air outlets, and the controls on the door panel. However, when sitting in this car you can tell there was an army of engineers who were tasked with ensuring maximum functionality of even the smallest unnoticeable details. Also new to 2018 is some additional interior colors, such as Midnight Blue, Cognac, and Ivory White, all complete with coordinated contrast stitching and piping. We tested the BMW 440i convertible in the new Snapper Rocks Blue mixed with the White Dakota leather interior, and it looked like the car was straight from Miami Vice. I swear the creamy white interior was getting dirt marks on it from just looking in the same direction as the car.

Driving

The 4 series has a lower center of gravity and a wider\longer wheelbase compared to the 3 series. Combine that with the stiffer M sports suspension with advanced damping technology and an upgraded steering set-up, the 440i drove more like a sporty coupe compares to a full sized 4-door sedan. All the engine options for the 4 series are from the latest modular BMW EfficientDynamics family and include the BMW TwinPower Turbo. The inline 6 found in the 440i coupe generates 320 hp and has an average combined fuel consumption rate of 9.6 l/100km. These engines are mated to a standard eight-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission, with an available six-speed manual gearbox for no-cost only on the BMW 4 Series Coupé.

2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid – Automotive Review

2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid – Automotive Review

The 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is ready to excite.

Looks:

The 2018 Toyota RAV4 is here, a bold design and one that many people are happy to see. The Toyota RAV4 is  one of those vehicles that people see on the roads every day, and it just starts to blend into the background. Over the past two years the RAV4 has kept the competition at bay with it’s updated version. This RAV4 is quite exciting, sleek body lines, lower and a little wider making this more aerodynamic. Swept back headlights and a more aggressive front end are just some of the changes made a few years ago. The rear lift-gate features a one touch operation that has selectable memory height settings, perfect for my family were my wife had it set so low I could barely get my arm in and I had it set so she would need a step ladder to close it.

There are five models to choose from FWD LE, FWD XLE, AWD LE, and AWD Limited, giving a little something for everybody.

In The Cab:

Ample use of soft touch materials can be found throughout the interior. Comfortable front seats and rear seats that take  into consideration the comfort of your passengers. 60/40 split fold down with reclining seat backs that are just as comfortable as the front seats and lots of leg room too. The driver’s seat on the LE models features a 6-way manual adjustment while the Limited model receives an 8 way power adjustable. The cargo area has a capacity of 1.09m and 2.08m with the rear seats folded down.

Safety first:

Many safety items are standard in this RAV4. Dual stage driver and passenger airbags, driver knee airbags, front seat mounted side airbags, roll sensing front and rear head/ side curtain airbag. Star safety system which includes vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, and smart stop technology. There are also lane departure alert, blind spot monitor, and rear cross traffic alert available as an option, which I think should be standard on all new models.

Roadworthy:

I am really impressed with how quiet and comfortable the interior is. You can hold a conversation with your children in the back without have to yell over the road noise. I found the 4-cylinder engine to be smooth and responsive.

Verdict:

Improving upon a vehicle that has a proven track record, while keeping up with the latest technologies one reason Toyota continues to be so popular today.

Power:

A 2.5 Litre, Hybrid Synergy drive (HSD), 2.5 Litre, 4 cylinder gas engine with 176 horsepower and 172 lb ft of torque mated to a 6 speed automatic electronically controlled transmission with sequential shift mode.

2018 Mazda6 – Automotive Review

2018 Mazda6 – Automotive Review

With a slogan of “Driving Matters”, Mazda has produced a juggernaut sedan that’s a leader in its class. While most North American consumers are leaning towards SUV’s and Crossovers, it hasn’t stopped Mazda from quietly outperforming its competition in the sedan market.

While it may not get the recognition it deserves, the secret is out that Mazda isn’t going to be taken lightly. The all-new Mazda6 has been loaded with upgrades from its previous year, as well as continuing with previously unmatched features throughout.

Mazda6 has been given some improved chassis refinement to enhance its already superb drivability. Complimenting the handling with a slight increase in power. New to the Mazda6 is a 250 horsepower-2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Paired with its automatic six-speed transmission, with seamless shifting capability and virtual zero turbo lag; the Mazda 6’s power is more than adequate.

Already possessing one of the more elegant cabins compared to its counterparts. It was shocking to know that, aside from the steering wheel and minor trim pieces; the cabin of the Mazda6 is completely remodeled. Whoever said “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” obviously didn’t design this Mazda. However, this does follow the strategy Mazda outlined of pursuing constant updates and improvements on a much more frequent basis compared to the standard refresh and remodel schedule. The new horizontal dashboard provides a more sophisticated look and is easier on the eyes. A thin strip of satin chrome cascades around the cabin elevating the look even further. None of that cheap plastic on the dashboard downgrading its luxury feel. The entertainment module is also less clunky than most, but the rotary controller can take some getting used to, leading to many frustrating involuntary actions by mis-selecting through overshooting the appropriate icon. A seating upgrade is also a new addition for 2018 as well as gaining an inch of display on the navigation screen (previously 7 inches). Which every man can agree upon, you have to make every inch count.

The 2018 Mazda6 introduces various trim levels to satisfy everyone’s price range. Starting with the standard GS model at $27,000. The 187 horsepower 2.5L engine in the GS is partnered with standard features and a fabric interior. Stepping up from there we have the $31,600 GS-L. The GS-L has the same engine configuration but gains premium features such as; leather seating, moonroof, and iActivsense safety controls. The iActivsense safety gives the driver increased safety functions like collision warning, lane departure, and pedestrian alert sensors. I personally recommend the $2000 powertrain upgrade which will grant you a turbocharged boost to the 2.5L engine. Conversely, at $35,800, the GT model will come with the turbocharged, 250 horsepower engine, as well as features like premium Bose audio system, heads-up display, auto-dimming mirrors, and some signature lighting for the cabin. Dipping into the more luxurious credential is a new thing for this Mazda Sedan, with the all-new signature passage for the Mazda6. Special trims for the interior and exterior come with the signature package like; A luxurious Nappa leather upgrade for the seats, a beautiful real satin wood trim, ultra-suede dashboard, a 360-degree monitor, and parking sensors come with the $38,800 top of the line Mazda6.

Changes to the suspension geometry have improved the dynamic handling of the Mazda6’s drivability. Electric steering which has been growing in popularity has been added to assist in maneuvering. I found that the power and acceleration were adequate and it didn’t suffer any of the turbo lag that can easily ruin any driving experience. The transmission automatically responds smoothly and seamlessly. However, the manual six-speed transmission was removed from production in Canada, leaving some drivers slightly disappointed.

For those willing to appreciate innovative design, affordable luxury, and comfortable drivability the Mazda6 delivers on all fronts. These Japanese automakers have made aggressive steps towards putting the competition in its rearview mirror. When you are looking for your next sedan, Mazda has to be included on your list.

2018 Mazda CX-9 – Automotive Review

2018 Mazda CX-9 – Automotive Review

The 2018 Mazda CX-9, proving that being altruistic doesn’t mean you can’t also take care of yourself. As the pilot that everyone is depending on to get them to their destination, the CX-9 shows us that you don’t have to give up your driving passion when buying a large SUV.

Voted the best large utility vehicle in Canada for 2018 by AJAC and as a top IHSS safety pick, the Mazda CX-9 is full of premium design, craftsmanship, and materials all for an affordable price. Every effort was made to make driving less distracting and more relaxing, in this three-row 7-passenger crossover SUV.

Design

The impressive KODO design is very prominent and unique, with a sleekness and agility combined with a deep muscular stance. The attention to the smallest details is found throughout the vehicle with handcrafted materials such as Nappa leather-trimmed seats, and genuine aluminum and Rosewood trim. I mean even the paint is revolutionary! They specifically designed a new “Soul Red” which is able to deliver an enhanced level of vividness and depth. Mazda’s TAKUMI-NURI robotic painting technology aims to create the most innovative mass production painting process using a semi-transparent paint layer coated on to a reflecting layer comprised of regularly arrayed aluminum flakes, finished with a clear layer that emphasizes translucence.

Drivability

The innovation continues throughout the driving experience, starting with the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T 4-cylinder with Dynamic Pressure Turbo.  The Dynamic Pressure Turbo provides a higher level of power at lower levels of rpm with no noticeable turbo lag. A class-leading 310 lbs-ft of torque at a minimal 2,000 rpm gives you immediate power exactly when you ask for it. The Mazda CX-9 also is equipped with SKYACTIV Vehicle Dynamics, which was the winner of the AJAC award for Best New Innovation Technology for 2017. This technology works behind the scenes to provide a smoother, less tiring drive for both you and your passengers. The i-ACTIVE AWD monitors 27 sensors 200 times per second, so everything from steering angle, windshield wiper use, exterior temperature, and braking patterns is considered to perfectly deliver the right amount of traction right to when and where you need it. At 200 times per second, the CX-9 can start to lose traction, use the electromagnetic clutch to shift power from front to rear tires, and regain traction all before your brain could even compute the minor changes in road conditions. Also, ensuring optimal distribution of torque, minimizing drivetrain energy loss, allowing you to only be using fuel to power AWD when required, providing an exceptional combined fuel economy of 9.6L/100 km. As for the size and available room in the CX-9, the 3 rows of seating provided enough room for us to drive 6 full grown adults out to dinner on a few occasions while testing. Although the people in the back rows might not be the most comfortable if they are over 6ft and have to sit back there for an extended period of time. For use as a family vehicle, you could easily take the kids and all their toys out for an extended road trip without any worries.

Safety and Warranty

Mazda offers plenty of standard and available passive/active safety features to help keep you and your passengers/family safe. Using all the latest innovations such as cameras and radar sensors gives your CX-9 an awareness of what is happening in the world around it. The i-ACTIVSENSE safety technologies support safe driving habits by helping the driver recognize potential hazards, as well as provide pre-crash systems which help attempt to avert collisions or reduce their severity in situations where they cannot be avoided. Now while these systems are not a replacement for safe and attentive driving, like the backup camera or heads-up display, they provide an extension of your natural abilities and reactions. Mazda provides Canada’s only unlimited mileage warranty program. It features unlimited mileage on the 3-year New Vehicle, 3-year Roadside Assistance, 5-year Powertrain, and 7-year Anti-Perforation warranties. Allowing you to drive the vehicle as you intend, not having to worry about how far or long you are driving.

2018 Ram 1500 – Automotive Review

2018 Ram 1500 – Automotive Review

The 2018 Ram 1500 now referred to as the “Classic.” The fourth generation of the pickup that was first introduced in 2009, and to this day has done very well in Canada.

Many special edition trucks are available that provide a customized look directly from the factory floor.

A few examples are:

  • Express Blackout and Big Horn black appearance package offer to match body-color with the grille and ram head badging on front and rear of the truck, along with 20” semi-gloss aluminum wheels.
  • Hydro Blue Sport uses a Hydro blue pearl paint with a performance hood and 20” polished forged aluminum wheels.
  • The Longhorn special edition features a 2-tone paint with a striking interior. Light Greystone suede headliner, canyon brown/frost leather seats with brown piping and ruby red accent stitching. The wood accents are walnut ash and are made from real wood. The interior cabin features an electronic rotary dial shifter that allows you to go from park to reverse and drive. This was one thing I did not like, and maybe I am alone with this, but as a truck owner, I want a shifter that you can grab onto and put it into gear whether it’s in the center console or on the steering column, so it feels more like a true classic truck. Nothing worse than quickly turning up the radio only to find you just put it into gear.

The available Rambox cargo management system is a great idea, as it keeps your everyday use items safely locked away and available for quick access. When this box was first introduced it did not feature remote locking capabilities and it was only lockable with the key. I brought this up with the designer when I was invited to the launch of this truck in Santa Barbara, California back in 2008. He said they could not do it because it was cost prohibited due to the many parts such as actuators and wiring, and besides, he thought truck owners wouldn’t mind having to use the key. I told him that this was a big miss and 6 months later they made the change to remote locking with the key fob. For all those who have enjoyed this feature, your welcome!

I have driven the fourth generation 1500 truck when it was first introduced to the press in 2008 and every year since then. The drive is exceptionally smooth and the fit and finish are superb in all trim levels.  If you are driving on road or off-road the captain chairs keep you in place and in control. I was a little worried when they first introduced the coil spring five-link rear suspension, but it reduced the wheel hop that was common with the previous generation and was quite surprised on out how it handled trailer weight.

Key Features:

  • 3 engines to choose from
    • 3.6 L Pentastar VVT V6 delivering up to 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque
    • 5.7 L Hemi VVT V8 produces 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque

    • 3.6L V6 Engine – 9.6L/100km highway
    • 5.7L V8 Hemi Engine – 11.0L/100km highway

2018 Range Rover Sport SVR – Automotive Review

2018 Range Rover Sport SVR – Automotive Review

The Range Rover Sport SVR, a thoroughbred English racehorse SUV, that is good enough for the royal family.

It’s no wonder we see so many luxury car manufactures releasing super high-performance SUV’s. I mean what’s not to love? Besides the fact that the whole idea seems to run counter to everything we know about sports cars. Take a look at the styling of almost every supercar.. Low to the ground, aerodynamic, lightweight, minimal features and creature comforts. However “we have the technology!” with the blank cheques from companies like Range Rover, engineers all over the world have been working around the clock to develop superpowered, ultra luxury SUV’s like the Range Rover Sport SVR

The iconic English brand has a long history of luxury and sophistication, for example, Queen Elizabeth II’s herself is a big fan, having a relationship with Land Rover that extends back to 1948, when her father King George VI was presented with the 100th production vehicle. The Range Rover Sport SVR stands proudly on that history as the highest refinement of production Land Rover technology. The SUV is built in the SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) state-of-the-art facility – (the Jaguar Land Rover Center of Excellence), which is located near Coventry, England about an hour and a half drive north of London.

“SVO is about pushing boundaries and making vehicles that stand out. These are not just great-looking vehicles. We make outstanding vehicles. Vehicles with real substance and real integrity”

- John Edwards Managing Director of SVO

The SVR is the most expensive production Range Rover available.  With an incredible 575 HP V8 supercharged engine, capable of sending the SUV racing down the road from 0-100km/hr. in 4.5 seconds, making it also the fastest Range Rover created.

Having that much power in an SUV might seem absurd, but when you mate it to an ultra-luxury SUV with all the latest features, technology and comforts you really get the best of everything that the industry has to offer. I mean sure you won’t be able to beat that similarly powered 575hp Jaguar F-Type SVR coupe on a racetrack but believe me… going 0-100 in under 5 seconds is way more than enough for 99.9% of the driving this vehicle will ever do. Plus, with the switchable Active Sports Exhaust, featuring a two-stage active exhaust system letting you set the V8 exhaust notes truly free, allowing you can roll up to any situation as if you were driving a Formula One Racecar

The features of the Range Rover Sport SVR are designed to be either in your face or so refined that you barely even notice them heightening the entire experience. Examples of this refinement can be found in things like the Automatic Access height, which lowers the vehicle slightly helping you to get in and out of the vehicle when parked. As well as the almost $5000 Meridian Signature Sound System, with 28 speakers and 1700 watts. The system tailors the sound experience to the precise acoustics of your Range Rover’s interior and with the Trifield 3D Technology the cabin space is expanded to a 3D audio experience. For a more public display of affluence, available features like the $10,000 carbon fiber exterior package complete with carbon fiber trim and hood, matched with the $10,000 Special SVR paints including chroma and pearl will make you easily stand out from the rest of us plebs.

Key Features:

  • Starting at $133,000 CND
  • V8 Supercharged Engine with 575hp and 700 lb-ft torque
  • Maximum speed 283 km/h
  • Acceleration 4.5 (secs) 0-100km/h

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio – Automotive Review

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio – Automotive Review

Just as many were asking for an exotic and unique flair to the crossover class, Il solo e unico, the Godfather himself has granted their wish for Italian flair in the form of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio – “on this the day of his daughter’s wedding.” With a combination of slick styling and a formidable chassis, the Stelvio is all about producing comfortable drivability; every trip to the market will feel like an adventure through the foothills of Tuscany. Prego! I can smell it now, a hint of olive oil, some fresh baked pizza, a little parmigiana. Dannazione I am stopping for something to eat. Enzo park the car and wait for me here.

Named after one of the most infamous scenic roadway’s in the world (Italy’s Stelvio Pass), the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has both impressive standard features and exotic styling, which is sure to fulfill the appetites of these crossover starved North Americans. Built extensively with aluminum framing for weight and control, the Stelvio handles incredibly and vigorously. Assisting with the handling is the addition of the electric power steering. This is exceedingly helpful when parking or turning, allowing for minimal effort to be applied to the steering wheel.

The exterior is unique and unlike most other vehicles around. I have had conflicted opinions throughout my personal test drive and from others continuously offering to share their thoughts. I have had some that say it looks like a Mitsubishi rip-off; which I took as a negative comment to its credit. While others having said it looked original, foreign, and a was nice change from the similar looks to all the regular SUV’s you see everywhere. This is like being the new kid at school; some people aren’t going to trust an outsider, and can take some time to warm up. While others are going to be immediately intrigued by the novelty. I concluded that I do like the downward aggressive Bi-Xenon headlamps and uniquely shaped front grille. However I find the rear to be somewhat plain and boring, and the rear window from a functionality standpoint can be slightly difficult to see out of.

The interior is pretty standard and lacks pizzazz. For a country that produced Giorgio Armani, and Guccio Gucci, the mark was missed on some fashionable design to this interior. The seating was noticeably uncomfortable, and clearly didn’t take the average sized American into account. The side bolsters of the seat were so tight that a man built like Tony Soprano physically couldn’t fit, and he would have had to find the shmuck that designed it. The Stelvio has pride itself on being more spacious then other crossovers. With a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat configuration, the space opens to an impressive stretch of trunk capacity.

The impressive powerhouse is a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine that produces 280 horse power, 306 lb-ft of torque and a top speed of 232 km/h when mated with the 8 speed automatic transmission. Fantastico!  Starting at $43,240 for a base model, the Stelvio is on the expensive side amongst it’s direct competitors. While that comes with some premium standard features like a leather interior, automatic power hatch, and Apple CarPlay to name a few; The Ti trim performance package includes paddle shifters, limited-slip differential, and sport-tuned adaptive suspension to enhance your driving experience.

Key Features:

  • Starting at $43, 240
  • 2.0L turbocharged engine
  • 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque
  • 0-60 mph 5.4 sec.

2018 INFINITI QX80

2018 Infiniti QX80 – Automotive Review

2018 INFINITI QX80

2018 Infiniti QX80 – Automotive Review

Introducing the Infiniti QX80, Proving what’s old is still good and what’s new may not be as shiny as one thinks. Going back in time to the first generation QX56 (JA60 here) was the start of a respectable full-size luxury SUV, with a similar 5.6L power plant but with a miserable fuel economy rating of 20L/100 km. The styling was appropriate for the time, but it lacked some of the refinement you would expect from today’s high-end SUVs. In 2011 the QX56 was introduced at the New York International Auto show with an all-new design. No longer sharing the platform with the Nissan Armada, it now was a luxurious version of the Nissan Patrol that had not been sold in North America since 1969. With a few minor tweaks and adjustments, we arrive at new 2018 Infiniti QX80, the next level of refinement for first-class travel.

Interior

Semi-aniline leather seating with 10-way power driver’s seat and 8-way power front passenger’s seat with dual occupant memory system for outside mirrors, steering wheel, and seat positions linked to individual intelligent keys. Three rows of seating and up to 8 passengers can fit in the spacious SUV. Bose cabin surround system with digital 5.1 and 15 speakers with a Bose Centerpoint 2 signal processor. In-dash CD/DVD player, Sirius XM satellite radio, streaming audio via Bluetooth, USB jack, USB 2, 4 charging ports, rear entertainment system with dual 8-inch screens.

Power

5.6 L V8 engine delivers 400 hp and 413 ft-lbs. of torque mated with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Double overhead camshaft (DOHC), 4 valves per cylinder with micro-finished camshafts, direct injection, variable valve event and lift (VVEL) and continuous variable valve timing control system that optimizes opening of intake and exhaust valves.

Safety

Driver and passenger dual stage airbags, side curtain airbags for the first, second, and third row. Front & rear proximity sensors, backup collision intervention, forward collision intervention, blind spot warning and lane departure warning. Around view monitor system with moving object detection.

Warranty

  • 4 year 100,000 km complete vehicle warranty
  • 4-year roadside assistance
  • 6 year 100,000 km powertrain warranty
  • 7-year unlimited km corrosion perforation warranty

Last Words

Driving the Infiniti QX80 for a week you can appreciate the level of comfort this SUV brings. You drive much more relaxed and stress-free. The cabin is remarkably quiet, very little road noise. There was slightly more body roll than I expected but this is normal with large SUV’s tending to feel this way. A little stiffer suspension would probably cure it but would also sacrifice the smooth ride. Overall, I enjoyed this vehicle and at the tested value of $88,295 I should hope so.

Key Features

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – Automotive Review

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – Automotive Review

The SUV has come a long way from what we see today. Before they were called SUV’s we had the International Scout, Chevy Blazer, and the Ford Bronco. These were a great way to take your whole family four-wheeling, camping or on a family holiday. Like everything, things evolve, and improve in an attempt to make our lives better. The sky-high price of fuel has meant re-evaluating the length and cost of our outdoor adventures. Well not anymore, introducing the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the world’s most technically advanced 4WD plug-in hybrid SUV.

Three models to choose from, SE S-AWC, SE S-AWC Touring and GT S-AWC.

The interior is very similar to the standard Outlander, it seats 5 comfortably and everything is well laid out. You can monitor your battery level and fuel consumption along with selecting phone and music options. Available in the Outlander PHEV are two AC power outlets located in the rear seat and cargo area. These standard plugs draw directly from the drive battery and provide 1,500 watts of electric power, perfect for any outdoor activity requiring a little power.

EV Drive Mode

In the EV Drive Mode, the Outlander PHEV is driven in a very eco-friendly performance mode by the two electric motors, with energy being supplied exclusively by the lithium-ion drive battery pack (100 percent electric-powered). This mode is excellent for running errands and performing daily family duties

Series Hybrid Mode

When the energy level remaining in the lithium-ion drive battery pack is low or when the need arises for a sudden and/or an additional degree of acceleration, the two electric motors are powered by the battery pack and provided additional electricity by the gasoline-powered generator hence, “hybrid” mode.

In this configuration, the gasoline-powered generator helps charge the lithium-ion drive battery pack and provides additional power to the pair of electric motors

Parallel Hybrid Mode

In this drive mode, the Outlander PHEV uses the gasoline engine to drive the front wheels; the front axle features a built-in clutch that switches the system to Parallel Drive Mode mainly for engine-powered travel at high speeds. The two electric motors positioned at the front and rear, operate seamlessly when additional power is required, such as driving uphill. The gasoline-powered engine/generator will feed any excess energy back into the lithium-ion battery pack.

Charging

The Outlander PHEV can be easily charged three ways. Standard at home 120V outlet (13 hours for 8 amps and 8 hours for 12 amps). Public or home 240V outlet (4 hours) or DC fast charging public charging facilities which will charge up to 80 percent capacity in less than 30 minutes.

Safety

Blind spot warning system, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning and multi-view camera system

Engine

280 hp electric motors offering 101 lb-ft of torque for the front axle and 144 lb-ft of torque at the rear

Warranty

  • 10-year or 160,000 km powertrain warranty
  • 10-year/160,000 km lithium-ion battery warranty
  • Five-year or 100,000 km comprehensive warranty.

Fuel economy

  • 5.1L/100 Kilometers
  • Full electric mode expect to see a 37 Kilometer range
  • Total combined driving range of approximately 50 Kilometers

Verdict

When driving a hybrid or electric hybrid such as this you find yourself obsessed over saving fuel. It is almost like playing a video game, trying to beat your top score. I personally enjoy driving SUV’s because of the truck like feel and space for my family and things. Finally seeing a reliable PHEV option in an SUV like this Mitsubishi Outlander is something I am excited about, and fully support.

2018 Tesla Model 3 – Automotive Review

More than 2 years ago, on an early morning in downtown Vancouver, my dream of owning a Tesla 3 got to a very slow start.

Waiting in the queue for more than 2 hours amongst other car enthusiasts, I could feel a certain carnival-like atmosphere. It brought me back to a similar experience I had, one where I had waited patiently at a glowing new Apple store for a chance to be among the very first to own an iPhone which was released about a decade ago in 2008. Waiting to enter the Tesla Sales Office, many smart vendors were approaching the queue to offer things like electric docking stations for faster home charging and memberships to special electric vehicle clubs. Finally, I entered the holy grail – a Tesla Sales office and was greeted by a friendly person who helped to take my reservation and a small $1000 deposit.  At this time, while all this was happening across the country, there wasn’t even a picture of the car available yet, as Elon Musk was set to reveal the car to the world a mere 10 hours later. The only possibility to jump to the front of the proverbial queue was to go to an official Tesla location and take this leap of faith.

In the end, this rather bold move enabled me to get production number 30,063 from the worldwide Tesla 3 deliveries. Having a number from this early on in production means it was probably produced during the time when Elon Musk was known for sleeping on the factory floor and would often take personal control of assembling Model 3’s. I can probably claim that our car may have even been produced by the extraordinary man himself.

During those long last few years, you may have read in the news about all the endless delays in production and even a few scary stories about potential quality issues. I regularly got a few sniggering remarks like: “your car is probably being built in a tent” or “Will you get your car this year at all?”  and “hopefully you can get your car before the company goes bust”.

That all changed when a Tesla representative based in Las Vegas, USA contacted us in early July of 2018 and announced that our car has arrived at the Tesla delivery center recently set up in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver B.C. So, on July 9th, 2018 the day had finally arrived where I could take possession after fully paying my dues of a brand new shiny red Tesla 3.  At the time of ordering our Tesla 3 was customized with a multitude of options including; an extended battery (not that I need it but it makes it go faster!), fully panoramic glass roof (which helps make the neighbors envious), 19” tires and special rims (the standard issues are dead ugly) and an improved sound system (what’s the point driving in near silence if you cannot fully appreciate the nuanced performance of Luciano Pavarotti or Lady Gaga).

One special incident at delivery must be mentioned: Each and every representative of this still young and rather unique company was very friendly and took every possible effort to make our experience a memorable event. However, when one extra chirpy employee told us: “Welcome to the family!” suddenly it felt a bit like I was joining a cult…

Now to the question which might interest you most: How is it to drive? Naturally, you would think that I’m biased, but I even took the risk of letting my friend and neighbor do a test drive and asked his wife to inspect and comment on the interior. Both results were positive, and they both mentioned how this is clearly the future of the automotive industry, and I’m pretty sure I heard them walking away muttering something about high gas prices and the possibility of self-driving.. I really like the balanced handling, rapid acceleration and the overall driving experience (in near silence). The interior with its unique single central display will take some getting used to – but like the Apple iPhone in 2008, this car represents the first taste of what’s to come.
