2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class – Automotive Review

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class – Automotive Review

The Mercedes G-Class is the latest victim of the “redesigning” phase Benz is going through. Something that hasn’t been done in over 4 decades. The exterior still screams a “demanding box on wheels” with a just a few minor touch-ups and a few added inches to the stance. The changes made to the exterior are so subtle, they aren’t noticeable to the casual fan unless they are placed side-by-side. The interior, on the other hand, has been completely overhauled and upgraded, and it is a sight to see. If you liked the last box on wheels, you’re going to be happy about this one. The G-Class stays true to its heritage but adds a slew of technology making this luxury SUV more capable than ever.

The G-Class interior has gone through an aggressive, but a much-needed update. More space, more tech, sleek design, all while keeping a few imperative features that have survived previous tweaks. Talking about the grab handle in front of the passenger and the side-hinged barn door with the full-size spare fitted at the rear. The pop-up screen has been replaced with a 12.3” infotainment system (will not come with MBUX interface, yet) that has been molded into the dash. The steering wheel has been swapped for a much more modern looking one with more appealing controls. Mercedes updated the air vents with the classic-style vents that were once used in the older models while removing the out-dated climate control dials and oversized buttons; although the toggle switches for the locking differentials remain a staple design. The shifter has been replaced with what looks to be a touch style writing pad, while the new gear selector sits below it. The cabin has loads of space, which means you will finally be able to fit average sized adults in the back seats now. The driver and passenger receive more shoulder and elbow space, and the backseat passengers are gifted an extra 6 inches of leg room. The driver seat will come with air-filled side bolsters that will adjust according to the driving styles. The G-Class’ interior will (finally) be on-par with the E-Class and S-Class vehicles.

Under the aluminum hood will sit a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 that will pump out 416hp and 450 ft-lbs of torque and will deliver a reasonable 21mpg. Coupled with the V8 will be a 9-speed transmission, and all together we will get a 0-62mph time of around 5.5 seconds. The AMG version will crank out 577hp and jump to 60 in 4.4 secs. Thanks to the aluminum fenders and doors, the G-Wagen sits 375lbs lighter, meaning exiting and entering doesn’t involve a loud “guh-gunk” anymore. There will be 10.6 inches of air between the G-Wagen and the dirt it drives on, and an independent front suspension which will make it even more capable off-road than before. With the rack and pinion steering set-up, it will make the steering feel very light and will be a breeze to drive around town.

If you are wondering why the G-Class went through a redesign, it is because the Range Rover was becoming more popular with buyers. The out-dated style and tech in the G-class were far behind what Land Rover was able to offer. The Lexus LX570, Lincoln Navigator, and Toyota Land Cruiser are part of the conversation when it comes to size and practicality, but include luxury and the G-Class stands alone. The 2019 G-class has gone through a redesign and has come out the other side better in every way. The exterior tweaks were minimal but effective. The interior overhaul was drastic but vital. Something not many car manufacturers are able to accomplish. The G-class is for making a statement, but throw a bit of practicality and legroom into the mix, and you might be able to justify spending the $130,000 for the G550. Keyword being might…

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – Automotive Review

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – Automotive Review

The SUV has come a long way from what we see today. Before they were called SUV’s we had the International Scout, Chevy Blazer, and the Ford Bronco. These were a great way to take your whole family four-wheeling, camping or on a family holiday. Like everything, things evolve, and improve in an attempt to make our lives better. The sky-high price of fuel has meant re-evaluating the length and cost of our outdoor adventures. Well not anymore, introducing the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the world’s most technically advanced 4WD plug-in hybrid SUV.

Three models to choose from, SE S-AWC, SE S-AWC Touring and GT S-AWC.

The interior is very similar to the standard Outlander, it seats 5 comfortably and everything is well laid out. You can monitor your battery level and fuel consumption along with selecting phone and music options. Available in the Outlander PHEV are two AC power outlets located in the rear seat and cargo area. These standard plugs draw directly from the drive battery and provide 1,500 watts of electric power, perfect for any outdoor activity requiring a little power.

EV Drive Mode

In the EV Drive Mode, the Outlander PHEV is driven in a very eco-friendly performance mode by the two electric motors, with energy being supplied exclusively by the lithium-ion drive battery pack (100 percent electric-powered). This mode is excellent for running errands and performing daily family duties

Series Hybrid Mode

When the energy level remaining in the lithium-ion drive battery pack is low or when the need arises for a sudden and/or an additional degree of acceleration, the two electric motors are powered by the battery pack and provided additional electricity by the gasoline-powered generator hence, “hybrid” mode.

In this configuration, the gasoline-powered generator helps charge the lithium-ion drive battery pack and provides additional power to the pair of electric motors

Parallel Hybrid Mode

In this drive mode, the Outlander PHEV uses the gasoline engine to drive the front wheels; the front axle features a built-in clutch that switches the system to Parallel Drive Mode mainly for engine-powered travel at high speeds. The two electric motors positioned at the front and rear, operate seamlessly when additional power is required, such as driving uphill. The gasoline-powered engine/generator will feed any excess energy back into the lithium-ion battery pack.

Charging

The Outlander PHEV can be easily charged three ways. Standard at home 120V outlet (13 hours for 8 amps and 8 hours for 12 amps). Public or home 240V outlet (4 hours) or DC fast charging public charging facilities which will charge up to 80 percent capacity in less than 30 minutes.

Safety

Blind spot warning system, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning and multi-view camera system

Engine

280 hp electric motors offering 101 lb-ft of torque for the front axle and 144 lb-ft of torque at the rear

Warranty

  • 10-year or 160,000 km powertrain warranty
  • 10-year/160,000 km lithium-ion battery warranty
  • Five-year or 100,000 km comprehensive warranty.

Fuel economy

  • 5.1L/100 Kilometers
  • Full electric mode expect to see a 37 Kilometer range
  • Total combined driving range of approximately 50 Kilometers

Verdict

When driving a hybrid or electric hybrid such as this you find yourself obsessed over saving fuel. It is almost like playing a video game, trying to beat your top score. I personally enjoy driving SUV’s because of the truck like feel and space for my family and things. Finally seeing a reliable PHEV option in an SUV like this Mitsubishi Outlander is something I am excited about, and fully support.

2018 Ford Expedition – Automotive Review

First opportunity to drive this redesigned 2018 Ford Expedition and I decided to take the family on its own expedition.

Early Saturday morning involved motivating everybody to get up and grab their things as we make our way out the door at 6:30 am. First stop was the local gas station to top up the tank to make sure we start on a fully prepared to make it to our destination, Pemberton valley, and more precisely the beautiful Joffre lakes.

Heading over the Port Mann bridge with little to no traffic, I thought this is going to be a breeze. Hit the Ironworkers memorial bridge and then a full stop, where did all this traffic come from? Inching our way up the cut and it finally started to open up again. The Expedition was equipped with an Eco, Normal, and Sport mode settings. I put it in Eco to save on fuel, and instantly it felt like we were driving with an underpowered 4 cylinder engine. Switching back to normal was a noticeably improved driving experience. Driving through upper West Vancouver on a clear sunny day with a beautiful view of mountains on Vancouver Island, entering the Sea to Sky highway I switched to sport mode to tighten up the suspension as we head into our first curve paying close attention to the speed limit to make sure we avoid the temptation of pushing the vehicle to its limits.

It is amazing how fast people drive this highway, at the speed limit I was being passed by vehicles that are 15 years older with blue exhaust smoke pouring out of them. Anyway as we just passed through Lions Bay we come across an accident on the side of the road where two cars swapped paint as they jockeyed in for a better position. The police were there handing both of them tickets. Short delay and back to driving. The new 10-speed transmission on the Expedition is paired with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine producing 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque and the transition from full stop back to highway speed was smooth and seamless. In Sports mode, there is very little body roll for a full-size SUV. We entered Squamish in what seemed very little time, much of which was attributed to this fun to drive SUV.

A quick stop for some food and supplies and we were off again. Climbing a little higher with the breathtakingly picturesque Tantalus Mountain range to the left. Dropping down into the Cheakamus Canyon and around Daisy lake to Whistler where a different form of traffic appeared as many people were out riding their bikes on this warm spring day. Green lake comes into view; I know why they named it green lake wow is it ever green! At this point, I asked everybody how they felt the trip was going so far.. the kids were sleeping and my wife kept saying I was driving too fast.

I decided to rid myself of this annoying cabin noise and put the Expedition into cruise control where the vehicle took over with its advanced technologies including a lane assist reducing unintentional drifting of the vehicle. The adaptive cruise control utilizes radar and cameras to monitor traffic to maintain a set distance between vehicles. Collision avoidance systems help to avoid other vehicles or pedestrians, blind spot system that monitors outside the driver’s view. The cruise control was certainly put to the test with the steep mountain grade and the accelerating and deaccelerating caused by the barely roadworthy Volkswagon van we got stuck behind. As we entered the town of Pemberton and stopped for lunch at the Pony restaurant which was a great choice that my daughter made, we decided that was enough and headed back without ever making it to the final destination of our expedition.

2018 Nissan Pathfinder – Automotive Review

2018 Nissan Pathfinder is on a mission, one would say it has gone rogue, wait a minute, wrong vehicle. The Pathfinder is engineered to get your family where you need to go comfortably.

Looks:

One of the biggest changes happened a few years ago when Nissan made the switch from body-on-frame to a unibody construction. This reduced the overall weight, which makes a big difference in the fuel efficiency. The shape and design characteristics of this truck have changed, much smoother lines, and more aerodynamic. I remember the first Pathfinder introduced in 1986 to in an attempt to capture some of the Toyota 4runner market. It looked promising but just never completely took off. I think the focus was more on the off-road when it should have been more on-road with the ability to travel off-road. This version has done it, taking design and style from the Nissan Rogue they created a larger cross-over that can comfortably transport 7.

In The Cab:

My tester for the week was the Platinum and it came fully equipped. Heated and cooled leather seats with 8-way power adjustability, 4-way power for the front passenger, EZ flex seating system with 2nd row 60/40 split fold-flat bench seat, and 3rd row 50/50 split fold-flat reclining bench seat. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is heated and is a nice feature in our cold Canadian winters. There was plenty of wood tone trim that was not overdone and gave it a rich feel. Bose audio system with 13 speakers, AM/FM/CD, auxiliary audio input jack, USB connection, streaming audio via Bluetooth, steering wheel mounted audio controls and speed-sensitive volume control and just some of the comforts you will find in the Pathfinder Platinum. The around view monitor uses four cameras to create a composite image from above and displays it on the touchscreen monitor. This helps show the vehicle’s position relative to the lines around the parking space and guides you into the tightest locations easily.

Safety:

Nissan’s advanced airbag system includes dual-stage front airbags, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side impact, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact airbags along with a rollover sensor. Traction control (TSC) and vehicle dynamic control (VDC) is standard on all models. Rear cross traffic alert, automatic emergency braking are some of the latest technologies added.

Power:

The engine is a 3.5 L, 24 valve, DOHC V6 that produces 284 horsepower mated to a CVT transmission (continuously variable transmission) The All-mode 4×4 I-system allows selectability between 2WD, Auto, or 4WD lock. An independent front strut and multi-link rear give the vehicle a comfortable ride. It is also equipped with hill descent to help with those steep roads.

Roadworthy:

This vehicle does remind me of the Nissan Rogue. It is larger but feels very similar and that’s a good thing. I think Nissan is heading in the right direction with this vehicle. If studies show limited off-road use, then why spend money making this an off-road vehicle. Have the capabilities to drive down a gravel road or up to the ski hill but concentrate on making it as comfortable and fuel efficient as you can. May the force be with you?

2018 Mazda CX-5 Exterior Driving Towards

2018 Mazda CX-5 – Automotive Review

The Mazda CX-5 is a perfect example of the precision and quality expected from fine traditional Japanese manufacturing. The bold sporty design combined with luxury features and materials provides consumers an award-winning small 5-seater SUV at a very reasonable price.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2018 Mazda CX-5 was slightly redesigned with a new front grille, and lower placed headlights with sharp LED fog lights. The design of this vehicle embodies the Japanese Mazda KODO idea, reminisce to flowing lines of calligraphy and “soul of motion” that can be found in their art like craftsmanship. While it may be designed with a Japanese focus, they didn’t forget about the intricacies of the Canadian market, with design features such as zinc-coated steel corrosion plates, and an insulated engine compartment for our harsh winter weather.

Interior

Following the high bar set by the exterior design team, the luxury and quality continues to be found throughout the interior of the Mazda CX-5. Starting with the unique signature material found in what they call “Metal Wood,” which provides the warmth and depth of wood paneling with the strength and toughness of metal. Mazda has really focused on the driving experience and how technology can positively impact the massive time-consuming activity of transportation. An example of this that can be found in the interior, is the surprisingly quiet cabin, which has been sound deadened from materials in the floorboards, sound insulating glass, and extensive seal insulation. While outside noise may be minimized, the 10 speaker BOSE professional stereo system was custom designed for the new CX-5 and took into consideration things like cabin size, seat position, and sound variances. These comforts aren’t only for the front passengers, as Mazda has included many features for the rear seats as well, such as heater ducts under the seats, reclining seats as well as available heated rear seats, rear passenger vents, and dual-zone climate controls. The 20/40/20 split can provide up to 1,687 L of cargo space which can easily handle a few large and small suitcases for the family.

Driving

SKYACTIV and i-ACTIV technologies can be found all over the drivetrain of this SUV. The high-efficiency SKYACTIV-G engine helps provide better fuel economy and torque compared to a standard gasoline engine while reducing noise and vibration. The Mazda CX-5 is available in a 2.0 L, 2.5 L, and a 2.5 L with the available new technology of Cylinder Deactivation. This automatically shuts down two of the cylinders in light-load situations such as when cruising at a constant speed to provide fuel savings. i-ACTIV AWD found in the CX-5 can forecast road conditions and adjust to deliver increased traction exactly when it is needed. Monitoring driving conditions 200 per second helps predict road conditions and the technology can ensure optimal distribution of torque and minimizes drivetrain energy loss, meaning that you’re only using fuel to power AWD when it’s required. To put all this refinement to work the CX-5 includes SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS with G-Vectoring Control, which was the winner of the 2017 AJAC Best New Innovation Technology Award. It works behind the scenes to achieve a smoother, less fatiguing drive by responding with fewer steering adjustments and suppressing head and body sway for greater comfort and a higher sense of control during abrupt maneuvers or driving in poor road conditions such as rain and snow.

Technology and Safety

Comes loaded with a slew of sensors, and alerts that help ensure proper safe driving practices. The CX-5 offers many ways to remind you to stay focused on the road and offers an exciting glimpse at how technology will improve the safety and quality of driving in the future

2018 Range Rover Velar – Review

One of the most elegant, luxurious, and polished vehicles on the market today the Velar is a work of art. In an ever growing highly-competitive class which features the Jaguar F-pace, the Maserati Levante, and the BMW X6 to name a few, sitting in the Range Rover Velar is something unique. The Velar just oozes that Range Rover feel.

Perhaps it’s the just the posh sense of self entitlement impression the Velar imprints. This high-tech SUV is accompanied with a 380-hp supercharged 3-litre V-6 engine. Supported by countless features, an adaptive suspension makes driving on any road surface indistinguishable.

The exterior design is purely compelling. Its handcrafted body style complemented by the low-angle roof make the Velar a sight for sore eyes. Shaped bigger than the Evoque but, slightly smaller than the Audi Q5; this Range Rover fills that happy medium. With its integrated deployable door handles, blacked-out badges, slick LED headlights and taillights, dapper vents, and optional 22-inch wheels give this Range Rover a striking look. The R Dynamic that was tested featured a stunning Black Package®, making the Velar look like a shadow ripping through the city.  An exaggerated rounded shape to the front end is an acquired taste that I’m not sure how I feel about. I often notice the amount of dead space and gap hidden underneath the plastic paneling which throws me off slightly, however from a distance where you notice that less, the shape definitely works. I will leave the debate open.

The interior is simplicity at its finest from Range Rover. I would expect nothing less since luxury has become Range Rover’s moniker. In order to match the polished look to the outside the Velar was designed using high-end materials like wood or aluminum to give the cockpit a stunning look. The leather seats are plush and comfortable as you would expect. There is a generous amount of space for the rear passengers as well as a tremendous amount of cargo room. The all-new dual display InControl Touch Pro Duo operates the seat controls, climate, and driving modes on a lower panel, while the upper panel controls the audio, settings and navigation. This very well could be overwhelming and confusing at first but, it sure does look impressive and high-end.

Weighing a surprisingly 4676 pounds, the Velar is anything but bulky in the looks and performance department. With a V6 supercharged engine producing 380 horsepower the Velar moves quite swiftly and smoothly, reaching 0-60 in 5.7 seconds. The suspension is tight and vigorous around every corner. The drive is smooth and dynamic on all terrain, with help from a series of drive modes ranging between six different configurations. You will notice that the ride is seemingly quiet as Range Rover has made the Velar’s interior soundproof from wind, road noise, and exterior sound. You do however; get to hear that crisp exhaust sound that this Velar produces.

The fuel economy in the Velar is something that I wish wasn’t an afterthought. This SUV remains identical to its Jaguar F-Pace counterpart; however this was a missed opportunity to gain an edge over its rival. This 6-cylinder’s 13L per 100km city and 10L per 100km highway aren’t spectacular especially with gas prices the way they are. For comparison sake, the Velar ranks lower than the Mercedes GLC43 AMG.

The drive was impressive to say the least. I’m not going to bore you with the typical it handled well, great power, highly recommend. I took it upon myself to test this Range Rover how anyone else would expect. This top heavy SUV with a thirst for power (and apparently fuel) was tested strictly on performance standards. With this in mind, the Velar controlled every turn immensely. This due in large part to the dynamic and adaptive suspension accompanied by added air springs. Agility-wise race mode engages the body by lowering itself by a couple inches, and shifts most of its power to the rear. The supercharged engine does well to jolt you back into your driving seat as you would expect. This is just one of the pillars of this Range Rovers ability. The latter being the various off-road modes. This capability raises the body, changes the powertrain, traction and differential; handling any situation from wet, muddy, or unstable road conditions with ease. It surely is an ode to the craftsmanship, engineering, and design from Range Rover. It truly is a work of art.

  • 3-litre supercharged V6 engine 380 horsepower

2018 Toyota Sequoia Exterior

2018 Toyota Sequoia – Review

The 2018 Toyota Sequoia, updated a little, and when I say a little, I mean not much at all.

This truck was introduced in 2008 and here we are in 2018 with little more than a few tech improvements and updated headlights. The laws of space and time seem to cease to exist on this platform. It is if you went into a black hole and came out 10 years later and nothing had changed. Then on top of all that as I am typing this, Toyota just announced a recall on 65,000 2018 Sequoias, so much for the updates.

Looks:

Oversized front and rear bumpers, large grille, LED headlights and running boards are some of the standouts to this large and in charge vehicle.

In The Cab:

The interior is designed to be comfortable and functional no matter what size the occupant. The driver’s seat is equipped with power lumbar support, and available as an option on the front passenger seat. The second row seats are split 40/20/40, and captain’s seats are optional. The Platinum comes with front and rear heated seats. The third row seat is split 60/40 and is reclineable. Optional power folding rear seats are also available and are very convenient when loading items. The switch is located in the rear and can be easily reached without any bending. There are many interior features and were very well thought out. Power rear lift gate with remote access, power fold side mirrors, auto dim rear view mirror, and power back door window with jam protection are just some of the highlights.

Safety first:

The Sequoia is equipped with Vehicle stability control, Active traction control, Anti-lock braking system, Electronic brake force distribution, and Brake assist. For added safety, Toyota created the braking system known as Smart Stop technology. This system cuts power to the engine allows brakes to take precedence over the accelerator when both pedals are pressed at the same time. I experienced this myself when my wife was driving and she heard about a shoe sale over the radio!

The collision safety features include side seat mounted side airbags, and roll sensing side curtain airbags that extend from the front seat to the third row seat.

New for 2018 is lane departure warning system, pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, auto high beams, rear cross traffic alert, and blind spot monitor.

Power:

Under the hood there is a 5.7L V8 engine with 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque, which is standard on all models. The transmission is a smooth shifting electronically controlled six speed automatic that utilizes hydraulic pressures that help ensure low noise levels.

Pump frequency:

18.4/13.8 L/100 km (city/highway)

Warranty support:

  • Basic 60,000 km
  • Powertrain 100,000 km
  • Corrosion perforation Unlimited km

Roadworthy:

This truck is incredibly smooth on the road, despite its massive size and weight.

Larger tires and wheels are required when manoeuvring a vehicle of this size. Standard 275/65R18 tires with 18-inch wheels complement the SR5 and Limited models with 275/55R20 tires and specially designed 20 inch aluminum wheels grace the Platinum

Verdict:

Can’t wait for the 2020 version. Hopefully the engineers have 20/20 vision.

Lamborghini Urus – Review

A few years back, Lamborghini released some concept sketches of an SUV that looked too good to be true, as most concepts do.

They then went quiet, and nobody knew what was going to come from it. Years went by, and in the most recent years, the demand for luxury SUVs sky-rocketed, and Lambo’ decided they wanted a piece of the market. On December 4th, 2017 they debuted the Lamborghini Urus. A luxury SUV, with the claim of being the “fastest SUV on the planet,” and surprisingly, the concept sketch seemed to be the final draft.

The good thing about the Urus is that it looks like it is a Lamborghini. They stuck with their winning recipe and made an SUV that Bruce Wayne would drive (in black). Offering big 22” and 23” wheels that fill in the hexagonal wheel wells very nicely. Sharp and aggressive lines running along the body, and huge front-end vents that would vacuum up your puppy if it got too close. The headlights and taillights are shared with the Aventador and Huracan. Also taken from the Aventador is the width of the Urus, 79.37 inches without the mirrors. The lowered stance that you may notice provides much less body roll than expected from an SUV weighing 4750 lbs. At first glance though, the silhouette of the Urus looks oddly familiar (to the F-Pace). The Urus looks utterly fast, and later you’ll understand just how fast it is.

Lamborghini claims the be able to seat 4, 6’ tall people comfortably in the Urus, and from the images, it seems viable. The dimensions all check out. They also added that it has a “low seating” style which would seem awkward for someone who is over 6’ tall. Other than that, the interior looks fantastic. The centre console has the same pilot-like control scheme as the Aventador and Huracan with the addition of 2 touch screens. The lower screen is used for climate control or a writing pad, and the top screen is for the navigation, and media, as seen in the new Audi A8. Honey-comb stitching in the optional Alcantara seats, or the optional 18-way seats with massage and cooling, will keep you comfy on the long drives. The boot has enough space to take some of your belongings with you, with leather and Alcantara covered 600-litre trunk.  Whereas the supercars from Lamborghini were more focused on an interior mimicking the cockpit of a fighter jet with leather seats, the Urus takes a different route and brings a more luxurious and high-quality feel.

Under the hood is a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine (same as the Audi RS6 and Bentley Benteyga) strapped to an 8-speed transmission, that powers all four wheels. Which is a big deal because this is the first time Lamborghini has fitted a turbo, let alone 2, to a vehicle. It produces 641hp and gives the driver a 0-60 time of just 3.6 seconds, and a top speed of 187mph, which makes it the fastest production SUV on earth, over the Jeep Trackhawk. Lamborghini used the V8 instead of the V10 that’s in the Huracan, and V12 in the Aventador because it was lighter and better for the fuel economy of 22.2mpg. Speaking of weight loss, the exterior and interior are littered with carbon fiber to shave off the lbs, which give it the best power-to-weight ratio in its class. Mix that in with a 48-volt electrical system and anti-roll suspension and the Urus will go around corners nearly flat. The 4-wheel steering doesn’t hurt either when it comes to track day, which Lamborghini says the Urus will be more than suitable for. The Urus comes with a wild 6 driving modes: Strada, Sport, Corsa, Sabbia (Sand), Terra (Off-Road), and Neve (Snow), one for each terrain. As convenient as these driving modes may be, it’s hard to imagine the Urus being driven on any surface but pavement. Having the option may change your mind

Before asking yourself why a twin turbo V8, dual touch screens, six driving modes, and 0-60 in 3.6s are needed in an SUV, understand that they aren’t. This wouldn’t be a Lamborghini if it didn’t though. Lamborghini’s identity is taking practicality and throwing it out the window and making bedroom wall poster cars. The reassurance with all these bells and whistles is that they’re proven. The V8 in the RS6 is wildly impressive. The A8s infotainment system is user-friendly and fluidly intuitive. The suspension system is from the Audi Q7 and Bentley Benteyga (heavy and bulky), and they drive smooth and stay flat. This is very much a product of VWs best and proven.

With the demand for luxury SUVs hitting all-time highs in recent years, Lamborghini has brought to us another option to consider. For around $200,000 US, the price of the Urus is a little higher than its competition, but with that gap, it comes with tons of features and an immense amount of ability. From what I’ve seen, I am impressed with what Lambo’ has been able to produce. The body and styling are demanding, the power and ability are mind-blowing, and the interior is sleek, luxurious, and intuitive. It seems to check all the boxes that one needs to pull the trigger and buy one. They’re expected to roll out this spring, and if you’re feeling a little polar bear-friendly, the hybrid model is set to roll out in 2019. So, if you’ve got the cash, dishing it out for the best wouldn’t be the worst investment you’ve made.

2017 Toyota 4Runner – Review

Rugged, sporty, and bold are some of the words that come to mind when describing the 2017 Toyota 4runner.

Looks:

Toyota has a history in this province with a strong following making it an icon for the past thirty years. The large grille opening and molded headlights look like a big mouth bass coming up out of the water and biting down on your lure, how’s that for adventure? And the good thing is there is no limit on how many you can take.

In The Cab:

The 4Runner has two rows of seats, with an optional 3rd row, available on the upgrade and premium packages.

There’s an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, four-way adjustable passenger seat, 40/20/40 split second-row seats, and 40/20/40 split third-row seats which include an optional one-touch walk-in feature to ease access to the back. All the knobs and dials have a rubber texture to emphasize the outdoor theme. The standard model comes with an eight-speaker, 160 watts AM/FM/CD system with an XM satellite-ready antenna. While the premium version receives a JBL AM/FM/CD/4 disc in dash changer that puts out 660 watts of power and includes; a sub-woofer, 15 speakers, iPod connectivity, steering wheel audio controls and Entune multimedia bundle. Entune includes destination search, iHeart radio, movie tickets.com, open table, Pandora, and Facebook. Great, now we’re going to hear  “ honestly officer, I was just posting a picture of you walking towards my truck on Facebook.” There is a12-volt DC power outlet located in the center console, glove box, and cargo area. The Trail edition and limited models feature a 400 watt AC power outlet. An available sliding rear cargo tray holds up to 200 kg and comes in very handy when camping.

Safety First:

Dual stage driver and passenger airbag, front seat-mounted side airbags, roll-sensing front and rear head/side curtain, driver and front passenger knee airbags and active front headrests with whiplash protection. Front and rear parking assist sonar.

Power:

Powering the 4Runner is a 4.0-litre V6 dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i ) V6 engine that produces an impressive 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque.

Pump Frequency:

  • 12.6L/100km city
  • 9.2L/100km highway

Warranty Support:

  • Basic 36 months/ 60,000 km
  • Powertrain 36 months/ 100,000 km
  • Corrosion perforation/ unlimited km
  • Roadside assistance 36 months / 60,000 km

Roadworthy:

Whenever I have a chance to test drive a Toyota 4Runner, I always talk about its legendary off-road capabilities, especially here in BC. What I don’t always talk about is the great on-road driving capabilities. The Toyota 4Runner hugs the road, and the bucket seats hug you. It is very comfortable to drive, and you feel safe driving it. The suspension and shocks give you a firm ride but not enough to give you that washboard effect. Vision while driving is superb, with little to no blind spots. The thick steering wheel and responsive steering make you feel like you’re driving a car. Now, all we need is a Hybrid model.

Verdict:

The Toyota 4Runner is on just about everybody’s wish list. Time to put on the red sports coat and jump!
